Mt. Airy Squad Car Tours was a fun experience for me for two reasons: 1) I have always been a big fan of the 1960s sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, and 2) I am a Ford Galaxie 500 owner and enthusiast. When I saw that they provided tours around Mt. Airy (the alleged inspiration for Mayberry in the show) in original 1960s era Galaxies, I knew I had to sign up. To meet for the tour, you congregate at Wally's Filling Station which is full of show-related gifts and trinkets, and offers a full scale replica of the Mayberry Sheriff's Office. The Galaxie driver then takes you to see all the sights around Mt. Airy, such as the granite quarry, the Andy Griffith house, the downtown, and the only Mt. Airy location mentioned in the show, Snappy Lunch. The tour guide was quite knowledgeable and exuded the "southern charm" we Yankees expect. If you're looking for an unusual yet enjoyable way to explore a bygone era in Americana, look no further than Mt. Airy Squad Car Tours.
